There is a little bit of temple model in all of us. And our consciences have been shaped by it. What you fear, what you see as sin, what you feel that God condemns has been taught to you in such a way that our consciences have been shaped by it. Consequently, we continue to hold on to things that hold us back and hold the church back.
Christianity is not complicated, but it’s incredibly demanding. It doesn’t require a million laws with footnotes to cover every situation we may ever face in life. Because God has built into almost all of us an intuitive ability in most every relational situation we face in life, to answer the question, “What does love require of me?” This is the essence of following Jesus.
When Jesus showed up on the scene, he launched something that was brand new. It was a total departure from the Temple model. He established what is called a new covenant, or a new arrangement between God and people. He gave us a new command, one command, that was going to take precedence over all the other commands. And He introduced a a brand new ethic which we’re going to to talk about. This is going to trickle down into all your relationships and all your behavior.
